Mui Ne Sand Dunes by Jeep: Sunrise or Sunset, Shared or Private?

Updated September 30, 2026 · 7 min read

Two people sitting on a sand ridge with their backs to the camera, watching the sun sink behind low dunes

There are 74 dune offers in our Mui Ne inventory and almost all of them do the same thing: an open jeep, four stops, four or five hours. The White Sand Dunes, the Red Sand Dunes, the fishing village, the Fairy Stream. Once you have seen three listings you have seen the itinerary.

So the choice is not which places. It is what time you go and who sits next to you – and those two questions have clear answers, which is what this article is for.

The two departure times are 4:30 am and 1:30 pm

Not roughly. Those are the pickup times, and the big operators quote them identically: the 5-hour Sunrise or Sunset Jeep Tour sets 4:30 am for sunrise and 1:30 pm for sunset, and the half-day Fairy Stream and dunes trip gives the same two times with an end at 9 am and 6 pm respectively. A few smaller operators add a 9 am departure, but the place works around these two.

A 4:30 am pickup is earlier than most people expect from a beach town. It is not padding. The White Sand Dunes are the far ones – a good half-hour up the coast road – and sunrise there is the entire point of the morning run.

The order of the stops is the real difference

This is the part the listings bury, and it decides which tour you want.

Sunrise: White Sand Dunes → Red Sand Dunes → fishing village → Fairy Stream. Sunset: Fairy Stream → fishing village → White Sand Dunes → Red Sand Dunes.

Read that twice, because it means the two tours are not mirror images of the same day.

On the sunrise tour you get the white dunes in the best light there is, the fishing village while the boats are actually coming in, and you finish the Fairy Stream at around 8 am, walking in cool water in cool air. You are back at your hotel before 9 and the day is still ahead of you.

On the sunset tour you reach the red dunes at the moment they turn – and the red dunes genuinely are better at sunset, which is why most operators schedule them last – not all: one of the big tours takes them first in the afternoon. But you walk the Fairy Stream at about 2 pm. That is the hottest part of a Binh Thuan afternoon, in a canyon with no shade.

Neither is wrong. If you only do one and you can face the alarm, take the sunrise. If you cannot, take the sunset and accept that one stop will be hot.

The jeep does not drive up the white dunes

Several operators say this on their own booking pages, each in their own words. One puts it plainly: “Our Jeep will not drive to the top of White Sand Dunes.” Another: the driver “is not used to drive up the sand dunes.” A third stops “at the parking areas only.”

This matters because the photographs that sell these tours are taken from the top. Getting up there is a separate purchase, made on the spot, in cash, from a third-party outfit at the dunes. It is not included in any of the jeep tours we looked at, and it costs more than the tour.

Here is what the operators themselves publish:

Option at the White Sand DunesPriceWhat you get
ATV with a driver450,000 VND per personTwo passengers plus the driver on one machine
Self-drive ATV, 20 minutes800,000 VND for twoYou steer; a staff member rides alongside
Quad hired without a driver, 20 minutes1,150,000 VNDOne operator only, at its own shop at the middle gate
Sandboard at the Red Sand Dunes50,000 VND per personSliding down on a board

The figures do not agree from page to page: for the ride with a driver one booking page quotes 450,000 VND, while another tour charges a 400,000 VND surcharge so that nobody rides along. There is no fixed local rate. The 1,150,000 VND option is the outlier, and it is the only one that lets you ride with nobody on the machine beside you – that is what you are paying the difference for. Prices are set at the dunes, not by the tour company, and the operators add that they can change without notice.

The practical consequence: bring cash, in dong. Two people on the €8.66 tour pay €17.32 between them. Add the 800,000 VND self-drive slot and the morning comes to about €44; add two rides with a driver at 450,000 VND each and it is about €48. For two people, self-drive is the cheaper line here, not the upgrade. The operators put “cash” on their own what-to-bring lists, and reviewers repeat it unprompted: “Bring cash to pay for the ATV ride and sand dune sleds.”

What is genuinely included

Every tour on this list includes the entrance tickets for the White Sand Dunes and the Fairy Stream, hotel pickup and drop-off, and water. That is worth knowing because the entrance fees are small and you will read conflicting figures for them online – if you are on a tour, they are not your problem.

What is not included varies, and one thing is easy to miss: the cheapest listing, the budget shared jeep tour at €6.54, states on its own page that no guide is included and that taxes of 10% of the booking are extra. It is a driver and a jeep taking you to four car parks. For a lot of travellers that is precisely right. For anyone hoping to be told what they are looking at, it is not.

Shared or private: the price gap here is small

This is where Mui Ne differs from almost everywhere else we cover. Look at the three most-reviewed dune tours starting in Mui Ne and the most-reviewed private one side by side:

TourFromRatingReviewsLength
5-hour Sunrise or Sunset Jeep Tour€8.664.81,1645 h
Group Tour with Quad Bike€8.594.91,1404 h 30
Budget shared jeep tour€6.544.69004 h
Private jeep tour at sunrise or sunset€9.554.74344 h 30

The private tour starts at €9.55 per person. The cheapest shared one starts at €6.54. Three euros.

At that gap the usual argument – private is a luxury, share it if you are on a budget – does not really hold. What you buy for the three euros is time: nobody else deciding when the photo stop is over, and a jeep that waits while you climb back up the ridge. One reviewer of the sunrise tour put the case better than we can: book private “so you get all the time you need to take great photos instead of rushing with other people in the group.”

The honest counter-argument is company. A shared jeep in Mui Ne is six travellers in an open car at dawn, and for solo travellers that is often the better morning.

One caveat worth reading before you book private: the operator of that private tour notes on its own page that the driver speaks limited English and suggests using a translation app. A private jeep here means a private vehicle, not a private guide.

Who should think twice

The operators list this themselves, and we repeat it rather than interpret it: the jeep tours state they are not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems, people with heart problems, and wheelchair users. One adds people with a low fitness level. There is a reason – an open jeep on a sand track, and then a walk through soft sand at every stop. If any of that applies to you, ask the operator directly through the booking page before you pay, rather than relying on this list.

What we would actually book

If you have one morning: the sunrise run, and pay the 450,000 VND for the ATV with a driver. You will get to the top, you will get the light, and you will not spend the rest of the day recovering from an alarm you set for 4:15 a.m.

If you are two people and photographs matter to you: the private jeep at sunrise, and the 800,000 VND self-drive slot. That is €19.10 for the two seats plus about €27 at the dunes – roughly €46 for the pair.

If you just want to see the dunes and are counting every dong: the budget shared jeep, no ATV, and walk up the white dunes on foot. It is hard work in loose sand and perfectly possible, and nobody at the gate will stop you.

All of the jeep tours, the sunrise and sunset departures and the private options are listed with current prices on their own pages, as is everything in the sand dunes category, which starts at €5.66.
