Quad Biking on Mui Ne's White Dunes: What You Actually Pay, and Who Steers
Updated September 30, 2026 · 7 min read
Our Mui Ne inventory holds 36 offers with a quad in them, from €7.95. Almost none of them is what a first-time visitor pictures, which is a quad hire desk you book like a car.
What actually happens is this: you arrive at the White Sand Dunes on a jeep tour, your jeep stops in a car park at the bottom, and there are quad bikes parked in a row waiting for you. The transaction happens there, in dong, in cash, with a business that has nothing to do with whoever sold you the tour.
That arrangement is the reason this article exists, because it is where every surprise on the day comes from.
The rates that apply on the spot
Four operators put dong amounts payable on the spot into their own listings. They do not agree: for the same ride one page quotes a different figure than the next. This is not a price list, it is what stands on the booking pages we read:
| What you buy | Price | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| ATV with a driver | 450,000 VND per person | Two passengers plus a driver on one machine. You hold on. |
| Self-drive, 20 minutes | 800,000 VND per machine | Two people share the machine and the 20 minutes. You steer, with a staff member alongside. |
| Surcharge to have the machine to yourself | 400,000 VND | One operator charges this; without it two guests share the machine. |
| Quad hired with nobody on board but you | 1,150,000 VND for 20 minutes | One operator, at its own shop. Up to two riders on the machine. |
| Sandboard at the Red Sand Dunes | 50,000 VND per person | A different place, a different activity, almost nothing. |
At the rate on 30 September 2026 – about 29,500 VND to the euro – the shared ride is roughly €15, the self-drive slot about €27 and the exclusive hire about €39. Go by the dong figure. Listings carry converted prices that quietly age; one of the pages above still shows a dollar equivalent that no longer matches the dong it sits next to.
“Self-drive” does not mean you are alone on the machine
This is the single most common misreading, and it is worth being blunt about because it is what the price difference is for.
On the 800,000 VND option you sit at the handlebars and you steer. You are not alone: one operator calls it “instructor assistance provided during the ride”, another puts it as the “driver sitting beside you”, a third speaks of a local support driver. A guest who has done it is blunter: “there is a worker on the back at all times”. Two riders can share the machine, and the staff member makes three.
The 1,150,000 VND option from a single operator is the one where nobody from the shop is on the quad with you. That is the entire difference between the two prices, and nothing in the listing titles tells you so.
If riding a quad with a stranger’s hand near the throttle is not what you had in mind, the cheaper option is not the one you want. If you have never driven one, on soft sand, on a dune face, having someone there is not an imposition.
Where the quads are: the middle gate
There are three entry gates to the quad area at the White Sand Dunes, and the shops are separate businesses behind them. One operator gives directions to its own, which tells you something about how easy it is to end up at the wrong one: look for the middle gate, with a sign reading NHƯ TRUNG BAU TRANG ATV.
If you booked a quad in advance as a standalone product rather than as an add-on, this matters. You also need to get yourself to the dunes – the standalone quad rental listing is explicit that transport is your problem, and the White Sand Dunes are a good half-hour north-east of the resort strip. Booking the quad without booking the jeep solves the smaller problem and leaves the bigger one.
When the bundled tour is the better buy
Some tours include the ATV in the ticket price. Compare the arithmetic:
| Route to a quad ride | Cost |
|---|---|
| Jeep tour at €8.66 plus 450,000 VND on the spot | about €24 |
| Jeep tour with the ATV included, €17.32, 4.6 from 355 reviews | €17.32, nothing further |
| Group tour with sunrise or sunset quad, €8.59, 4.9 from 1,140 reviews | €8.59 plus the dune rate |
| Private jeep including the ATV ride, €27.22, 4.5 from 186 reviews | €27.22, nothing further |
The bundled tour is also the better arithmetic: €17.32 with the ATV against about €24 for the jeep plus the ride at the gate – a good six euros apart. On top of that it saves the cash problem and the negotiation at the gate after a 4:30 am start. That is worth more than it sounds at six in the morning.
Read the inclusion carefully, though. “With ATV included” in a title can mean the shared ride with a driver rather than the self-drive slot, and the two are not the same experience. The itinerary text, not the title, is where that is settled.
What nobody publishes: age and licence
We looked through all 137 listing descriptions in the Mui Ne inventory for a stated minimum age. There is not one there – not for the quads, not for the jeeps, not for anything. The booking pages are a different matter: there, age appears not as a minimum but in the “not suitable for” list. Several operators exclude children under 2, one babies under 1. Still, none of them puts an age on who may steer.
So we are not going to give you a number, and you should be suspicious of any site that does. What we can tell you is what the operator pages do say: several list their tours as unsuitable for pregnant women, for people with back problems and for wheelchair users, and one adds anyone with a low fitness level. None of the six booking pages we read for this says anything about a driving licence for the dune quads, and none says anything about a helmet.
That is an absence of information, not a permission. The dune concession is not a public road and what applies there is the shop’s own rule, which is settled at the gate and not published anywhere. If you are travelling with a teenager who wants to steer, ask the operator through the booking page before you pay, and get the answer in writing.
The red dunes are not for quads
Worth saying because the two dune fields get conflated. The Red Sand Dunes sit close to the resort strip and are small, steep and busy; the activity there is a sandboard for 50,000 VND, usually rented from a child who will also show you where to sit on it. The White Sand Dunes, further out, are the vast ones, and they are where the machines are.
If your reason for coming is the quad, your tour needs to include the white dunes. Almost all of them do – but a listing that only promises “the Mui Ne sand dunes” has not promised you that.
In short
Bring cash, in dong, and more of it than the tour price suggests. Decide before you go whether you want to steer or be driven — and note that the gap depends on how many of you there are, because one price is per machine and the other is per person. Riding alone, self-drive costs about €12 more. Two of you sharing the machine actually pay about €1.70 a head less than two ridden trips would cost. And if you want the quad without the negotiation, book a tour that already includes it and be sure you know which version it includes.
The full list is on the quad and ATV page, which starts at €7.95, and the tours that combine it with a dune circuit are on the jeep tours page, from €5.66. If you have not yet decided between a morning and an afternoon run, that choice is set out in our guide to the dune jeep tours.
